A
of nearly 4,000 pharmacies in the U. S. have been forced to pull from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA)’s list of prescription drugs, including Viagra, Cialis and Levitra, after the drug was linked to serious risks.
FDA and other regulatory bodies said Thursday that the drug, which is taken by millions of Americans every day, was in the public health system at the highest possible level. They said the drug was not approved for use by the Food and Drug Administration and was a “significant safety risk”.
FDA said it is the sole source of supply and the agency is taking legal action.
“The agency has taken all reasonable steps to ensure that this drug is not a ‘black box’ warning” of serious risks to consumers, the company said in a statement.
It said it was the sole supplier of the drug and that a manufacturer was responsible for the removal of any label changes, warnings or recalls.
FDA said the drug was being used in less than 1,000 pharmacies in the U. and it has not been removed from the FDA’s list of prescription drugs.
The agency said the drug is only used for erectile dysfunction and “is not indicated for the treatment of hypertension, angina, or high blood pressure, or as a substitute for other medications or therapies.”
The agency also said it has not seen any “black box” warnings from consumers about Viagra, Cialis and Levitra.
In July, FDA and the Food and Drug Administration asked for “black box” warnings on some prescription drugs, but none of the drugs were required to be prescribed by the agency.
“The agency believes that these serious safety risks associated with the use of these drugs are not adequately communicated to consumers and should not be taken lightly,” the agency said in its alert.
FDA is requiring all drug manufacturers to carry out all required procedures and to notify the FDA of any recalls or any adverse reactions related to the drug.
FDA said it does not know whether the drug has been removed from the list of prescription drugs or if there has been a “black box” warning.
FDA also said it is working with the FDA to take additional steps to protect consumers from the drug’s harmful effects.
“The FDA is committed to providing safe, effective and life-saving medication for the millions of Americans who rely on prescription drugs to manage their health problems,” it said.
